Wikipedia article on the Shakespearean basis of West Side Story
A very informative and interesting article, which includes a section on the parallels between West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet and a fascinating account of the torturous evolution of Jerome Robbins' idea, in 1949, of doing a musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, which would deal with the conflict between two New York immigrant families (one Catholic and one Jewish) to be called "East Side Story," into what ultimately became the 1957 production of West Side Story we know today.
