There we will be discussing issues that include the following:
- Should students in American high schools be required to watch and/or read Romeo and Juliet?
- Is Romeo and Juliet a natural and important play for adolescents and young adults to see, read, and perform?
- Why doesn't Maria die at the end of West Side Story like Juliet does at the end of Romeo and Juliet?
- How would you explain tragedy in literature to adolescent students encountering it for the first time in Romeo and Juliet and do so in a way that would convert their frustration with what seems to them to be the completely avoidable deaths of Romeo and Juliet into understanding tragedy in literature?
